Though it’s been 3 months since the North Nevada Rally, the following movie still brings me a smile. Because North NV was a new rally in the CRS Championship in 2008, the event is restricted to coefficient 2 status by the championship rules. The organizers had enough road to make it a coefficient 3 rally, so in a stroke of genius, they made the last two stages a fun run and only teams that wanted to compete in that mini-regional did.
So I devised a wicked plan to bring a friend of mine along and have him read notes. He had never been in a rally car before, much less read notes. But my regular navvie showed him some tips at the lunchtime service and they went over the notes. We tied for fastest stage time on this second stage with another team running a PGT Subaru, despite the fact that our car wasn’t running very well. (We realized later that there was a crack in the intercooler — this mixed with high altitude really created a major power loss). Look for the cool picture in picture a volunteer shot of us drifting around a corner.
